Taylor 28, Seattle
Taylor 28 reconnects an unclaimed community to the city of Seattle through vibrant pedestrian open spaces. The first residential, mixed-use development in this transforming neighborhood, the project reclaims 20 feet of underutilized roadway to enhance public space and the quality of urban experience.
A formal tree grid and regular paving are abandoned in favor of rich materials and curving forms meant to draw pedestrians toward the building. Organic features with built-in seating carve small outdoor rooms for intimate gatherings, neighborhood dinners, and conversations. Rainwater runoff from the plaza flows into permeable paving and a series of urban raingardens. Canopy tree coverage and planting contribute to heat island reduction and CO2 offsetting. The 197-unit apartment complex also utilizes sustainable strategies for energy use reduction, additional heat island reduction, and stormwater collection.

First love. True love. Forever love.
For the past year, New York City-based product designer Matthew Waldman has been saving all of his used coffee grounds (like most designers, he drinks a lot of coffee, so it was no small amount to keep out of the trash). Waldman wanted to find a creative use for the grounds, and ended up combining them with resin to make a new material that he has formed into a line of plant pots.
